Do I need to use an adapter with my Fumoto valve?
Some oil pans feature a recessed area around the drain plug. These recessed ports can prevent a valve from being rotated or installed. An adapter may be used to extend the valve body beyond the obstruction. To maintain a compact profile when using an adapter, keep the following tips in mind:
Wide Recessed Ports:
Widely recessed oil drain ports typically do not require an adapter.
If the recessed area of your oil pan resembles the picture below, you may choose any valve that fits your vehicle; an adapter is not necessary.
Narrow Recessed Ports:
Narrowly recessed oil drain ports can prevent a valve from rotating during installation. Our adapters typically provide an effective solution to this issue.
SX-Series valves are also excellent alternatives, as they can be installed in tight spaces without an adapter. Unfortunately, some extremely narrow recessed ports are incompatible with Fumoto valves.

Simple Recessed Ports
-Short Adapters (ADP)
A short adapter will move the valve ½” away from the oil pan. In most cases, this is enough to clear a recessed port in the oil pan.

- Long Adapters (ADL)
- We recommend measuring the depth of your engine's recessed oil drain port to determine which adapter length is appropriate. Whenever possible, choose the short adapter.
- Long adapters protrude twice as far from the oil pan as short ones. By using a short adapter, you minimize the valve's profile and reduce the leverage and potential stress caused by engine vibration.
- Long adapters move the valve 1” away from the oil pan. For severely recessed oil drain ports, a long adapter may be necessary to ensure the valve can be rotated and installed properly.
- SX-Series ValvesSX-Series valves can help you avoid the need for adapters. The valve can rotate 360°, allowing you to choose an orientation that achieves the smallest profile and maximum protection. The unique through-bolt design can be tightened independently of the valve body, allowing for a simple installation that easily avoids obstructions. For certain oil pan designs, an SX-Series valve may be the only compatible option.
Severe Recessed Ports / Obstructions
Some oil pans have severely recessed ports. In certain cases, valves cannot be installed even with the help of an adapter.
- U-shaped Recessed Ports with Low Ground Clearance:
- Some oil pans may require both an SX-Series valve and an adapter. If the valve can only be positioned vertically (pointing straight down), use an ADP (½” extension) adapter to change the orientation.
- If the vehicle has low ground clearance, it is especially important to ensure the valve is not pointing vertically toward the ground.
- Very Narrow Recessed Ports:
- Unfortunately, there is no solution for this issue due to the lack of space to accommodate our valves. These are rare cases where the drain port is significantly smaller than standard designs, making it impossible for our valves or extension adapters to be installed. We apologize for any inconvenience.
